Disabled Development Association Manipur celebrates 17th foundation day

The 17th foundation day celebration of Disabled Development Association Manipur (DDAM) was held yesterday at Samurou Awang Leikai Community hall in Imphal West district.
Social Welfare Director Ngangom Uttam; DDAM Advisor Dr Kiran Yendrembam; State Commissioner for Person With Disability, Manipur W Birahari and Social Welfare Deputy Director L Dhaneshwar graced as the presidium members of the occasion which was held in a low-key manner due to the prevailing tense situation in the State.
Speaking at the occasion, Social Welfare Director Ngangom Uttam stressed on the need of making cohesive efforts by the various disability rights organizations for the welfare of differently abled persons.

Maintaining that Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who are working on various disabled related schemes need to make sincere efforts for the well-being of disabled persons, the Director appealed to all to report it to the Social Welfare Department if such NGOs are found to be working in a fraudulent manner so as to take up necessary actions against them.
He further stated that disabled welfare programmes and measures will be ramped up since the State Government has appointed a State Commissioner for Persons with Disability acting upon the request of differently abled persons and relevant organizations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Kiran Yendrembam expressed the desire to form a State Advisory Board for the enhancement of addressing the grievances of disabled persons in the State and to look into the activities of various disabled rights organizations.
The various disabled rights organizations including civil society organizations (CSOs) should hold moral responsibility while carrying out various disabled related activities, he added.
He emphasized that if the Acts and legislation which are in place for the disabled persons are implemented effectively, the issues and suffering of the disabled persons will be reduced manifold.
Dr Kiran also highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the provisions of The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 among the disabled persons and the public.
He also expressed the need of creating a website page and a social media platform to register the grievances of the disabled persons.
