Dialysis unit starts work at CCpur hospital

Imphal, June 24 2020: The new dialysis unit in District Hospital (DH) Churachandpur has started functioning from today.

The much awaited dialysis service will be provided under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme and the machines will be operated under the supervision of Dr Jamkhopum Baite, Physician.

DH Churachandpur is the first among 5 district hospitals instructed to make dialysis units operational within the month of June in a guideline issued by the State Mission Director to assist dialysis of COVID-19 patients.

Vumlunmang Vualnuam (Principal Secretary); N Geoffrey, State Mission Directory, National Health Mission and Dr Y Premchandra Singh, State Nodal officer made extra efforts to make the dialysis unit operational.

The dialysis services at District Hospitals of Thoubal, Chandel, Senapati and Bishnupur will also be operational very soon, said a source.

The State had earlier issued guidelines for "Dialysis Care" of COVID-19 patients.

As per the guidelines issued, new dialysis units in 5 district hospitals should be made operational in the month of June and dialysis service offered in RIMS and JNIMS are to be continued by making necessary arrangements even if they have dedicated COVID blocks or converted COVID care centres.

The existing dialysis services under Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme should continue and all the dialysis centres will be required to follow "Bio-Medical Waste" guidelines for COVID-19 patients issued from time to time.

Each dialysis centre should keep one dedicated dialysis machine for COVID-19 patients and no such patient should be denied from having dialysis.

Dialysis units/centres should have a "Helpline Number" for giving necessary instructions to the patients.

They should recommend COVID-19 tests of dialysis patients having Influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms and provide the information of centres providing COVID-19 test facility.

Dialysis centre staff should tie up with DSO concerned for the COVID-19 testing of dialysis patients who have ILI symptoms and the schedule for dialysis should be planned accordingly after obtaining the lab report.

COVID-19 patients should be examined / recommended by the Nephrologist for dialysis.

The dialysis centre should also ensure psychiatric counselling of such patients.

Concerned CMOs should be responsible for COVID-19 testing of dialysis patients recommended by dialysis centres and also should ensure early reporting of the lab test.

They also should ensure free ambulance service for picking up and dropping of COVID-19 patients from respective homes to Government health facilities if required.

Dialysis centres should also give information of dialysis of COVID-19 patients to DSO on daily basis and to DNO (District Nodal Officer), PMNDP fortnightly.

Dialysis centres should report to both DNO and DSO in any case of untoward incidents.

The centre shall also be responsible for an incident of medical negligence/legal liability.

For districts where dialysis facility is not available, CMO concerned should tie up with adjacent districts having dialysis facilities for COVID-19 patients.

However, if COVID-19 patient desires, he/she is free to go to any private health facility.

For dialysis of COVID-19 patients requiring ICU, CMO concerned should refer the case to the nearest Government set up where ICU facility is available.

The patient can also go to any private health facility if he or she desires.
