Imphal, February 19 2011:
Though BRO has been entrusted with the task of maintaining the stretch of National Highway 53 from Imphal to Jiribam, the Public Works Department of the State Government has been closely monitoring the progress of the work.
An official source in the Public Works Department said that although BRO has been entrusted the task of maintaining the road stretch from Imphal to Jiribam, the manner of executing the work is far from satisfaction.
The officials of the Department took up the matter in a joint meeting with the officials of the Union Ministry of Road Transport held at Delhi on February 11 .
In the said meeting, BRO claimed that 2000 labourers have been pressed into service.
But not more than 400 labourers were visible during an inspection of the work site, the source disclosed.
It may be noted here that BRO have earlier assured that the stretch of the National Highway 53 from Imphal to Jiribam would be made motorable by March next year and a standard one by 2013 .
The source further disclosed that even if the BRO has been entrusted with the overall maintenance of the road from Imphal to Jiribam, for some portions, BRO has given contract works to some companies.
So, to ensure quality of the work being executed, officials of Public Works Department including the Chief Engineer have been frequently visiting the work sites for inspection and monitoring, the source added.
