Imphal, February 19 2011:
Demands for the resignation of Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh was raised by the BJP state unit today alleging that he failed to keep his word over the matter of payment of revised pay bands of the 6th pay commission to the teachers.
When Chief Minister had agreed to pay the revised pay band to the teachers a year back in January last, now he keep aside his assurance and says that government has no means to pay the same.
BJP considered teachers' demand for CM's resignation, a right one and he should tender his resignation immediately, state BJP president Sh Shantikumar demanded.
Addressing a press conference at BJP office, Nityaipat Chuthek, the president criticized the ruling SPF government for remaining silent for such a long time in implementing the MoU signed with the teachers a year back with regard to the payment of revised 6th pay bands.
He recalled that after the signing of the MoU between the striking employees and government, chief secretary had issued an order on January 16, 2010 regarding the implementation of revised pay bands recommended by the sixth pay commission.
How the Chief Minister objected payment of revised pays to the teachers without revoking the order of the government? This shows that Chief Minister is talking irresponsible words and it is not a thing to be done by a head of the state, Shantikumar observed.
Teachers under the COTA rose up when there surfaced a gulf of different between the revised sixth pay bands of the Centre with the pay bands fixed by the state government.
Teachers have stopped attending class and go on fast-unto-death strike.
The agitations of the students demanding resumption of normal class in their respective school is a genuine one.
They even started torching their school building which is considered to be the temple of knowledge when government fails to address their demands.
Instead of addressing the demand of the teachers, government is trying to mislead the people with regard to teachers strike blaming them of behind the present conditions of the government schools.
In such situation, it will be better for Ibobi Singh to tender resignation instead of remaining talking on irrelevant matters, Shantikumar reiterated.
