Imphal, September 08 2012:
Stating that the State Government shares deep concern with the people on the issue of migrants, Chief Minister O Ibobi informed that the ongoing exercise to trace out illegal foreign immigrants must go on.
Talking exclusively with TSE today, Ibobi stated that there was strong instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs on the issue.
It is easier to identify illegal immigrants from Bangladesh but it is not so in the case of Myanmar nationals who entered Manipur illegally and have settled in different areas of Churachandpur, Chandel and Sadar Hills, Ibobi conceded.
The State Government has already taken up special measures at Jiribam, Mao and Moreh.
Deployment of commandos at Moreh is a step towards checking entry of illegal immigrants.
In the course of the recently launched drive to trace out illegal migrants, State Police have already pulled up 50 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar and sent them to jail.
The Chief Minister conveyed that the Assembly resolution for enforcing Inner Line Permit System in Manipur has been sent to the Centre but the Centre has not given its approval.
Talking about the State's financial condition, Ibobi stated that the State Government has been spending around Rs 200 crores every month in paying salaries which is double the amount spent before implementation of the 6th Central Pay Commission's recommendations.
The overdraft amount of Rs 400 crores which the State encountered at the beginning of the current financial year dented the financial condition of the State.
To avoid such situations in future, the Government has set aside Rs 600 crores without sanctioning it to any department.
Some Parliamentary Secretaries would be definitely appointed but it is too early to tell the exact number, Ibobi added.
