Imphal, August 18 2010:
Hitting the right chord and befitting the occasion, titular king of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba has today stressed on the importance of developing one's mother tongue and protecting one's indigenous script at the 7th foundation day of MEELAL, which has been spearheading the revival of the indigenous script of the Meities, the
Meitei Mayek.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion at GM Hall today, Leishemba said that it would be a fallacy to thrust all the responsibility of promoting and protecting the language and script on the MEELAL alone.
The responsibility should be borne by us all equally, he exhorted.
Leishemba, who attended the 7th foundation day function of MEELAL as chief guest noted that the days of the presence of numerous groups, each trying to revive the indigenous script of the Meiteis, are over and today a major transformation has taken place wherein, all the small groups have come under one umbrella.
This is a positive development, he noted.
Noting the efforts put in by MEELAL to revive the old script of the Meiteis, Leishemba said all must extent their help and cooperation to the endeavour of MEELAL in this regard.
Exhorting all to contribute their mite towards developing the language and nurturing it, Leishemba said that this should be taken as a moral obligation by all, irrespective of their vocation and profession.
Leader of MEELAL M Nongdalemba presided over the function, which was attended by a large number of people.
Addressing the gathering vice president of MEELAL, Moiranghtem Naokhamba said that it is a universal fact that each and every community or Nation leave nothing to chance to develop their language and script.
"We too have our own script and language and it should be the responsibility of everyone to develop this and bring it to the notice of the international fora," he added.
Today we see a revival of the indigenous script of the Meiteis after more than 200 years of opting for an alien script, he said and added that even today MEELAL is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the development and nurturing of the indigenous script or Meitei Mayek and language.
In connection with the day, a souvenir, a cassette and a primer of Meitei Mayek was released.
