Imphal, May 14 2026:
Sekmai police have registered an FIR a day after the abduction of 18 civilians including a 2-year-old girl belonging to Naga community from Leilon Vaiphei village.
The FIR was registered after a complaint was filed by the chairman of Konsakhul village today.
The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex Naga body, has meanwhile served a 24-hour ultimatum to the Chief Minister to secure safe release of 20 civilians allegedly taken hostages by Kuki militants.
The 20 include 18 civilians abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village and two Priests abducted from Sapermeina village.
The 18 civilians abducted and taken hostages from Leilon Vaiphei village include 12 females including the 2-year-old girl.
They also include a Reverend and a Pastor, and most of them hail from Konsakhul village, according to the police complaint.
The complaint alleged the 18 civilians were abducted by Kuki militants from Leilon Vaiphei village at around 11.30 am yesterday.
The civilians were travelling in four vehicles.
When they reached Leilon Vaiphei village, they were pulled down from the vehicles and assaulted, and their mobile phones were also snatched before taking them hostages, said the complaint.
While many organisations have vehemently condemned the abduction of civilians, the United Naga Council (UNC), meanwhile, has said that the State under Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh should take measures necessary to secure safe release of the hostages within 24 hours.
The UNC said the abduction of Nagas by Kuki militants yesterday caused Naga volunteers to react and take counter actions and detain members of Kuki community.
While it has been taking up every effort to reach out to relevant authorities and communities concerned, the hostages have not been released yet, UNC said.
"Immediate measures should be initiated for the safe and unconditional release of all hostages by both sides within 6 pm of May 15, 2026," said the UNC, urging the Government for appropriate actions.
The State has the authority, machinery and the responsibility to secure the release of the hostages.
If the desired intervention is not taken up by the State Government, it shall be solely accountable and responsible for any consequences arising out of its inaction, UNC said.
The lives and liberty of innocent civilians cannot be held hostage indefinitely and such grievous acts will inevitably spiral out of control if not contained at the earliest, it added.
