Birth anniversary of Maichou Thoukachanpa held

The 101st birth anniversary of Maichou Thoukachanpa, a pioneer of the revival movement for Meetei Mayek was held at Kuraomakhong United Club (KMUC) building, Sagolband Kuraomakhong, here, on Monday.
Maichou Thoukachanpa Ningshing Lup (MTNL), KMUC and Sayang Kuraomakhong Women's Development Committee jointly organised the observance, which began with offering of floral tributes to the statue of Maichou Thoukachanpa.
Addressing the gathering, MTNL president Naoroibam Amengba said that the late leader played a major role in the revival of the original Meetei Mayek and Sanamahi religion as well.
Remembering him is the duty of the present generation and the observance also serves as a reminder to the future generation about the importance of promoting the indigenous script, which is one of the most important elements of the identity of Meetei community, he said.
However, the anniversary has been observed in a solemn manner keeping in view of the current situation in the state, he said.
Members of the three organisations as well as local residents participated in the observance.
