River rejuvenation campaign continues

Continuing its weekly river rejuvenation campaign, volunteers of Eco-Network, Heirok cleaned up Heirok Part-Il Bazar Ningthoujam Leirak area near the river, on Sunday.
According to a release, the river clean-up drive is aimed at saving rivers, which have been turned into dumping zone for garbage, by sparing at least one and a half hours on a weekly basis to clean rivers.
The garbage piled up on the banks of the rivers have scattered and spread far and wide and made the surface area filthy and the river murky and polluted, the release said and appealed to the public not to discard garbage in the river and around the banks but to pack the garbage in bags so that garbage pickers and volunteers of Heirok Development Club and Eco-Network can dispose of the garbage at designated sites.
The release further urged the government to implement the Manipur Plastic Policy at the earliest while pointing out the need to conduct skill development programme for making items to replace plastic goods.
It also appealed for regular conduct of awareness programmes by the Manipur Pollution Control Board, Water Resources Department, PHED and Environment Department.
