Ukhrul, December 24 2023:
Advance Development Organisation (ADO) of Lamlang, Pharung and Shimtang village has repaired the abandoned and dilapidated Old State Highway from New Haven to Lamlang Gate on the way to Ukhrul.
In this connection, one Lungshing Leisan shared that the old road was once the main highway connecting Ukhrul district with the State capital.
However, after realignment and construction of a new highway from New Haven to Ukhrul via Shokvao, Ramva and Hungpung, it was left in a deplorable condition.
Ukhrul to New Haven Road via Lamlang village has been abandoned for at least 30 years without any maintenance or repair in spite of repeated appeals from the villages in the area, Leisan added.
Leisan further mentioned that the stretch of road which is about 17 km from New Haven to Lamlang village is the shortest route for the western villages.
On seeing the transportation hardship and inaccessible road, ADO took up the initiative to restore the road considering the immediate necessity of the western villages at this time of festive Christmas season and for the upcoming Western Tangkhul conference cum sports meet to be held in Pharung village during January next year.
The youth of LPS volunteered in road clearance and removal of landslide debris deposited in two major portions of the road stretch in order to make it accessible for the festive season, he informed.
According to Leisan, LPS (Lamlang, Pharung and Shimtang) villages have high potential horticultural products and the road is important for the livelihood of more than 20 western villages and to Ukhrul district headquarter, he said.
In addition he shared that the villagers have demanded black topping of the State highway from New Haven to Ukhrul via Lamlang Gate and resumption of MSRTC bus service at the earliest.
