National symposium on "India's contribution to the world of Mathematics" held

In line with the observance of National Mathematics Day, Department of Mathematics, Manipur University organised a 1-Day National Symposium on "India's contribution to the world of Mathematics" at VC Court Hall of Manipur University on Friday .
In a release, Department of Mathematics, MU, informed that every year, December 22 is celebrated as National Mathematics Day to mark the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, widely considered as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.
The symposium was conducted with the aim to raise awareness about the immense contribution made by Ramanujan and other eminent Indian Mathematicians in the field of mathematics and also about the importance of mathematics for the development of humanity.
The inaugural function of the symposium was attended by Prof N Lokendra Singh, VC of Manipur University; Prof O Ratnabala Devi, Head, Department of Mathematics, MU; Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, Dean, School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, MU and Prof M Premjit Singh, Dean, Students' Welfare, MU as presidium members.
Prof Jitendra Kumar Sharma, Department of Mathematics, IIT Delhi also attended the inaugural function as a Guest of Honour through online mode.
At the event, many distinguished speakers delivered talks on varied topics ranging from the life and work of Ramanujan to the significant contributions made by other eminent Indian Mathematicians from ancient times to the modern era.
One special attraction of the Symposium was an open Quiz competition on Ramanujan and other Indian Mathematicians along with a problem solving competition.
Prizes for the winners of the Mathematics Competition organised by the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) on December 21, 2023 were also distributed.
