Imphal, December 24 2023:
Art and Culture commissioner M Joy said that necessary steps, including appointment of required staff, will be taken up to fully enforce Manipur Public Library Act.
Attending the closing ceremony of the 30th Imphal Book Fair 2023 jointly organised by State Central Library and Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata, Joy said that failure in proper enforcement of the Act is creating several issues related with library.
It is also one of the main reasons behind the decline in library movement in the state, observed the commissioner, adding that the government has initiated certain measures to address this issue.
The department has submitted proposal for recruitment to fill the vacant posts, he added.
Joy further said that the department was uncertain whether or not to organise the book fair considering the present crisis in the state.
Later, the decision to hold it was taken in the interest of the people, who look forward to such fairs to buy books.
The department had not expected high footfall but the outcome was quite the opposite of their expectation, he said while informing that the department will organise future editions on a larger scale.
The commissioner also informed that the department constructed 51 stalls for the book fair, which was participated by several book houses and publishers from and outside the state catering to the demands of the visitors.
Prizes for different competitions organised during the book fair were also distributed during the closing ceremony.
