Curtain raiser for Manipuri Poetry Day held in Nagaland

Imphal, October 26 2023: As a prelude to the main event scheduled on the full moon day of Mera on October 28 at Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy, here, a curtain raiser event for Manipuri Poetry Day was held at St Joseph's University (SJU), Nagaland on Thursday.

The event was hosted by Fiction and Poetry Club of Manipur and was sponsored by the Department of English, St Joseph's University.

Dr Thokchom Sunanda, the head of the department presided over the event.

Dr Sunanda, in her address, emphasised the significance of Manipuri Poetry Day, an annual tradition observed by the Fiction and Poetry Club in Manipur on the full moon day of Mera.

She highlighted that St Joseph's University's English Department has consistently marked this occasion with great enthusiasm, even though many of the department's students are non-Meeteilon speakers.

Dr Sunanda expressed delight over the students having the opportunity to partake in an event dedicated to Manipuri poetry, and said that it reflected the department's commitment to promoting cultural diversity.

The event witnessed participation of 20 individuals who recited poems on a wide range of themes, including conflict, love, friendship, self-improvement, death, and the challenges faced in Manipur.

The programme concluded with a collective prayer for the swift restoration of peace and harmony in restive Manipur.
