Upgrade of MUC under consideration

Manipur University of Culture (MUC) vice chancellor professor Paonam Gunindro along with Ministry of Culture advisor Devendra Sharma, and MUC registrar L Radhakanta called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan on Thursday and apprised the latter on the current status and future objectives of MUC.
Sharing insights on the ministry's efforts, Devendra Sharma informed the Governor that discussions are underway to confer the status of an institute of national importance to MUC and also recounted the state government s proposal to elevate MUC to a central university in 2021.Professor Gunindra provided details about MUC, pointing out its unique status among the 460 universities in India, being one of only three culture universities.
The university houses 11 departments, each dedicated to various cultural branches, including tribal studies, he said.
The Governor welcomed the Centre's initiative to designate Manipur University of Culture as an institute of national importance and expressed optimism that this move would foster the flourishing of Manipur's rich culture and contribute to the preservation of age-old cultural activities in the state.
The Governor also referred to her recent speech at the plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held in Shillong, wherein she advocated for the development of Manipur 's vibrant culture in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Culture and DoNER Minister G Kishan Reddy.
In a separate meeting, Sainik School, Imphal principal Group Captain Rajneesh Kumar, and two others called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan.
The principal briefed the Governor on various programmes initiated for the school's development and extended an invitation to her for the upcoming annual day event scheduled for next month.
