Imphal, January 25 2024:
Three new radio navigational equipment for enhancing flight landing, even in low visibility, were commissioned at Imphal International Airport on Thursday.
With the commissioning of the three new equipment, flights, most of which have been landing from northern side of the Airport for nearly a year, will now be able to land from southern end of the airport and passengers will once again have the glimpse of Loktak Lake.
The newly commissioned equipment are Instrument Landing System (ILS), Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range (DVOR), and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME).
Imphal International Airport director Chipemmi Keishing along with joint general manager CNS, North East Region, Guwahati, Jagdish Bishya, BCAS Imphal RD Samananda Singh, and CISF Imphal Airport DC/CASO Mohnish Bagree were among the officials present during com-missioning of the three new radio navigational equipment on Thursday.
The Instrument Landing System (ILS) has two components - one to feed Centre Line Information of Runway to the aircraft and the other to feed Glide Angle Information for safe landing on runway.
DVOR is used to feed radial information to the aircraft, while DME feeds distance information of runway to the aircraft.
According to Chipemmi Keishing, maximum of the flights have been landing from the Imphal city side in the absence of ILS for nearly one year.
From now on, flights will land from the usual approach, which is from the southern side of the airport and passengers will be able to have glimpse of the Loktak Lake.
The previous ILS, which usually last 12 to 15 years, have been lying defunct for nearly a year and installation of new ILS began from February last year.
It is a big achievement to complete the installation within one year, he said.
