Imphal, January 25 2024:
Social Development Association Kangchup (SDAK), Kangchup Chingkhong Women Association and Kangchup Chingkhong Phayeng Kharang Singlup have jointly appealed to the state government to withdraw the plan to construct an oil depot in Kangchup Kharang Koireng Daag no.38 and 40.In a press meet at Manipur Press Club here Thursday, SDAK secretary general Angom Dijendro stated that people of Khangchup are against construction of an oil depot in such a small village and urged the government to select a more suitable location.
He informed that Bharat Petroleum is trying to take ownership of around 2.6 acres of land in Kangchup for the proposed oil depot.
However, the land area includes the village ground, pond and market shed, all of which would disappear once the depot is established.
Questioning whether the government "forgot" to ask the residents of a locality or village before taking up any project, he said that the people have always objected to the construction of the oil depot in the area.
However, the government ignored the people's wishes and published a gazette notification on October 28, 2022 .
Dijendro then urged the government not to work against the people by force, especially amid the prevailing conflict, while appealing to the government to withdraw the plan at the earliest.
