Imphal, March 26 2017: The 17 hours State-wide general strike called by Democratic Student's Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) against the induction of MLA Ashab Uddin of Jiribam Assembly Constituency as a Parliamentary Secretary affected normal life in the State.

Main markets including Khwairamband Keithel and shops were closed.

Inter-district and inter-State bus service and other passenger services stayed off the roads due to the general strike that started from today's midnight.

However, private vehicles were seen plying in many parts of the State.

Flight service was not affected by the strike.

Strike supporters imposed restriction on movement of vehicles in different parts of Imphal city.

Shops were forced to down shutters.

A large number of Manipur police and personnel of Central forces were deployed in key parts of the city to prevent unwanted incidents .

There was no news of any untoward incident during the course of the general strike.

Meanwhile, several volunteers of DESAM including its vice-president were pulled up by police in connection with the general strike.

Sources said a team of Imphal West district police pulled up DESAM vice-president Aheibam Anand from his residence at Sagolband Bijoy Govinda yesterday evening.

However, he was released late midnight.

DESAM general secretary (Imphal East) Nongthombam Thoithoiba was also pulled up by a team of police.

Bishnupur police also pulled up three volunteers of the student body, added the sources.

It may be mentioned that Chief Secretary on behalf of the State Government had issued a statement appealing to the student body to call off the general strike.
