Panchayat, ZP members submit memo to Prez, PM

Imphal, June 27 2023: Denouncing failure of the government to contain violence in Manipur, Panchayat and Zilla Parishad members of the state staged a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday.

During the protest, the members shouted and held placards with slogans like "No separate administration in Manipur", "Stop killing Meitei", "Save Indigenous people of Manipur", "Help displaced people return to their homes", 'Remove Assam Rifles from Manipur", "Restore peace in Manipur", etc.

Later, the protestors submitted a memorandum in this regard to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Nar-endra Modi and other leaders.

Speaking on the sidelines, a ZP member questioned how the PM and the union home minister plan to bring peace to Manipur when over the 40,000 central security forces deployed in the state are unable to control the violence, whereas allegations of paramilitary forces taking side with Kuki militants are on the rise.

The member also condemned the silence of the PM on the violence till date.

It may be'mentioned here that the Panchayat and ZP members have already submitted memorandums for restoration of peace in Manipur to leaders of all national political parties at the centre.

The members are also waiting for an appointment with union home minister Amit Shah and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Meanwhile, All Manipur Councillor and Corporator Welfare Association president Arambam Omila has urged for allowing elected Urban Local Bodies (ULB) representatives such as councillors, members and corporators in restoring peace and normalcy in the state.

Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here Tuesday, Omila said that elected ULB representatives are closest to the people and as such, will be able to help restore peace in the state.

She then urged the central and state governments to help-the displaced people return to their original places safely, returning the control of unified command to the CM and for both the union home minister and the CM to work together to control the violence instead of segregating the control.

She then cautioned for going to Delhi and staging protests in case the central and state governments fail to listen to the above demands.
