Imphal, April 01 2024:
Women of Konthoujam assembly constituency have resolved to cast votes in the Lok Sabha election in favour of candidate who is committed to implement National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur and inclusion of Meeteis in the ST list of the Indian Constitution.
Womenfolk of Nambol Khabi, Konthoujam Bazar and Nambol Thangtek Awang Leikai convened meetings in their respective areas and announced their stand in connection with the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Nambol Khabi Chanura Marup secretary Ch Taruni Devi noted that the present crisis is fallout of the government's move to prohibit entry of illegal immigrants from across the border and destruction of poppy plantations in the hill districts.
As the crisis since May 3 last year has seen loss of many innocent lives, hundreds left wounded, thousands of people rendered homeless and irreparable damage caused to properties, holding elections amid such a distressful situation is not appropriate, the secretary opined but hastened to add that as schedule for the Lok Sabha elections has already been declared, it would not be wise to forego the voting rights.
As such, Nambol Khabi Chanura Marup has resolved to vote for candidate who has firm resolve to implement NRC in Manipur and ensure constitutional safeguard of the Meeteis, she reasoned.
