Bishnupur, September 26 2024:
Pointing out that the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 and the Seven Years Devastation were fallout of struggles for power among siblings of the then ruler of Manipur, Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) has urged all leaders in the state to unite and save Manipur from disintegration.
Speaking in a function organised to commemorate the 73rd death anniversary of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot by Lamyanba Irabot Ningsing Thouram Observation Committee (LINTOC) under the auspices of PPCM at Kiyamba Shanglen in Bishnupur on Thursday, PPCM convenor Pheiroijam Nando Luwang opined that Manipur continues to exist today due to vision and tireless work of Jananeta Hijam Irabot.
He stated that the primary objective of the commemoration is to inspire the present youth with Irabot's thoughts, ideas, and courage to sacrifice his life for his motherland.
Manipur bereft of individuals embodying Irabot's qualities is a primary factor for state's steady fragmentation, he said and called upon prominent citizens and influential individuals to remember Irabot's ideals, unite and work to save Manipur.
In his address, LINTOC convenor K Thoiba said that Jananeta Irabot not only opposed atrocities of British colonisers but also resisted the formation of Purvanchal Pradesh after Manipur's merger into the Indian Union, thus, forcing him to go underground for his beliefs, before passing away on September 26, 1951, in Tangbo village at the foothills of Ango Hills.
He also pointed out the importance of present generation adopting Irabot's principles, standing united and pledging to save Manipur.
The function held with LINTOC co-convenors Kh Gopen Luwang, L Shyam Khuman and Y Tiken, PPCM advisors L Nganbi, Y Leirik Leima, S Memcha and M Purnimashi as presidium members was marked by offering of floral tributes to Hijam Irabot and observance of a two-minute silence in honour of those who lost then-lives in the ongoing conflict.
