Imphal, October 05 2023:
While accusing the government of not honouring the demands for resettlement of the people displaced by the conflict at their original residents within October 4 and clarity about the compensation amount, Joint Committee on Affected Meetei Victims' Manipur announced launch of sit-in and other forms of protest if government continues to neglect their demand.
In a release, Committee's publicity secretary Francis Keisham pointed out that people displaced by the conflict that broke out on May 3 are taking shelter in 249 camps.
Regarding the order issued by Commissioner (Home) on September 8 in 'Declaration by owner/tenant' where it stated that 'the amount of the compensation against my claim determined by the government as per the established criteria shall be acceptable to me', he said making the riot-affected parties to sign without providing proper established criteria is irrational.
Further stating that officials came to relief centres seeking opinions of the affected people whether they wanted to return to their home, stay in the fabricated house or at the relief camp, he said such questions added more burden to the already emotionally affected people as home cannot be replaced by fabricated house or relief camp.
He also urged CSOS, Ima Lups and student organisations to extend support to their protest against the failure of the government to honour their demand.
