Imphal, October 05 2023:
World Meetei Council (WMC) Central Executive Committee (CEC) has written to United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres on October 3 appealing to initiate action to bring an end to the on-going conflict and bring normalcy in Manipur.
In a release, WMC CEC secretary general Yambem Arun Meetei informed that it urged the UN to collaborate with the governments of India and Manipur regarding the issue.
WMC also apprised the UN with a brief history of Meetei and Chin-Kuki and the back ground of the present conflict which has been going on since May 3 .
"The fact is, despite the existence of irrefutable evidence, the Chin-Kuki has engaged in a relentless campaign of disinformation using various media outlets and social media.
They have gone to the extent of submitting memorandums to the UN and to the Governments of Israel, Germany and Canada with fake information and data".
"The on-going crisis in Manipur continues to be volatile.
To this date the Chin-Kuki militants contin ue their attack on the Meeteis - firing with mortars and guns on the farmers in the foothills despite the presence of Assam Rifles and Indian Army.
This has caused major disruption in the cultivation of paddy in the valley and is likely to lead to conflict-induced famine too besides the casualty of innocent Meetei people," it said.
WMC further mentioned that the conflict has led to various heinous crimes being committed by both sides.
The kidnapping and brutal murder of two Meetei students by Chin-Kuki militants and the subsequent protests by the students' fraternity in the Imphal valley on September 26 was met with ill thought-out heavy handed approach by the security forces causing injuries to as many as 40 students, some with life threatening injuries, etc., it added.
WMC presents the perspective of the situation without going into rhetoric.
We have stated the facts with evidential data, and requested UN to conduct their own study to verify the facts of this conflict and use their good office to take immediate action to end the violence and bring normalcy in Manipur," it conveyed.
WMC also requested the UN to work closely with the Government of India to safeguard the rights of the Meeteis who are the indigenous and aboriginal people of the region by including them in the list of Scheduled Tribes of the Indian Constitution.
To conclude it may be said that due to the factors such as false information and statements, fake data, etc., that are being taken as the truth and grave episodes of violence continuing, WMC felt the need to request the UN and seek their intervention to end the violence that has devastated normal life in Manipur since last May 3, it mentioned.
WMC also stated that the letter is comprehensive and runs into 50 pages and is available in WMC's website.
