Imphal, September 26 2024:
Liangmai Naga Council, Eastern Zone (LNC-EZ), has strongly condemned an attack on Wilubou Marenmai of Khunkhu Naga Village and a truck driver for Thomson Gas Agency, on Wednesday evening near the LPG Gas plant at Sekmai.
Condemning the assault, LNC-EZ said that the attackers, who identified themselves as members of an armed group, accused Wilubou of supplying arms to Kuki militants, which it dismissed as baseless and malicious.
The assault left Marenmai with severe injuries, including broken teeth and multiple physical traumas.
LNC-EZ expressed grave concern over such violence against the neutral Naga community, emphasising that this was not an isolated incident.
According to the Council, Naga civilians, especially in Imphal areas and along NH-2, have faced increasing harassment, extortion, and physical attacks, particularly from Meetei extremists.
The Naga community, which has remained neutral and acted as a peace advocate during the ongoing conflict in Manipur, is being targeted for its stance, the statement said.
"This cowardly attack on an innocent civilian demonstrates a gross violation of peace and security," the LNC-EZ said in its statement.
"Our community's neutrality and commitment to peace are being exploited by those who mistake our silence for weakness".
LNC-EZ called on armed groups to cease such unlawful activities and end targeting of innocent civilians.
The Council also urged the state government to take immediate action to ensure the safety of Naga citizens, particularly in vulnerable areas and demanded that law enforcement agencies apprehend the attackers within two days and bring them to justice to restore public confidence.
The LNC-EZ statement reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of the Naga people and pledged to continue advocating for peace and justice in the state.
