Imphal, August 19 2023:
Shija Hospital and Research Institute, chairman and managing director Dr Kh Palin said that changes in lifestyle has considerably led to a rapid increase in the case of diabetes and eye problems in the state.
Dr Palin was speaking at the inaugural function of a newly opened OPD of Shija Eye Care Foundation on Saturday.
The OPD was inaugurated by Manipur University Registrar professor W Chandbabu as the chief guest.
Dr Palin who was present as guest of honour stated that due to the changes in lifestyles, people of the state are suffering from various 'lifestyle diseases' among which diabetes is one of the most common diseases.
It is natural for eye problems to come up among diabetic patients.
As such, with high number of diabetic patients in the state, the number of people suffering from eye problems have also increased manifold.
He further informed that ever since its days at RIMS road, Shija Hospital has been providing eye care facilities.
Later in 2008 after the hospital was shifted to Langol, and the Shija Eye Care was added as part of Shija Hospital.
Afterwards, in 2015, it was separated from Shija Hospital and developed as Shija Eye Care Foundation under the Lions Arvind Institute of Community Ophthalmology (LAICO) and Aravind Eye care centre, Madurai.
Dr Palin further stated that according to Aravind, despite a number of people living in the state with cataract problems, only a few are being operated and treated successfully.
This is because, people consider eye problem as not serious, which is very unfortunate, he said.
Eye screening should be done immediately as soon as problems started to show up and conduct cataract operation as and when required.
Since a new OPD block has been opened, Shija Eye Care centre will be able to provide more efficient services to the public.
Moreover, a new operation theatre and 100 bedded block will also be constructed very soon, he added.
The function was presided over by Manipur University Research and Management Cell director professor Th Ibohal Meitei.
