MLA Muivah raises concern over cultural assimilation

Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah has raised concerns about the danger of cultural assimilation in today's fast-changing world in his address as the chief guest on the third day of the Hunphun Luira Phanit 2024 celebration, an annual seed sowing festival, at Mission Compound, Alungtang in Ukhrul town on Saturday.
MLA Muivah reminded the audience about the importance of preserving and ensuring the continuity of our rich culture in today s increasingly interconnected world.
"With the widespread influence of westernization, our cultural system, fundamental principles, and social norms have been diluted and are being dominated by foreign cultures," he said, cautioning that if this trend continues unchecked and unbalanced, there is a real danger of cultural assimilation.
The allure of the modern' lifestyle and the constant bombardment of foreign media can often overshadow the importance of preserving our own traditions and values, he said, while pointing out such trend is a cause for concern, especially for small and remote communities, where the influence of outside cultures can be more dominant.
However, amidst these concerns, Muivah also stressed on the need to strike a balance.
He acknowledged that in today's world, it is almost impossible to completely isolate ourselves from outside influences.
Instead, he encouraged the people to embrace modernization while also holding onto their cultural roots.
He emphasized that preserving our culture doesn't mean rejecting all forms of progress, but rather finding a way to adapt and integrate traditional values with modern ways of living.
At the same time, Muivah also highlighted the importance of hard work, determination, and entrepreneurship in the daily lives of the people and urged the community to work with dedication and commitment to ensure a successful and prosperous future.
The ongoing Luira Phanit celebration is one of the most anticipated festivals for the Tangkhul Nagas, and it falls every year on February 15.This festival holds a significant place in the hearts of the people, as it not only marks the beginning of the agricultural season but also brings the community together in celebration of their shared cultural heritage.
It is a time for feasting, dancing, and reconnecting with one's roots.
Muivah also reminisced that the traditional celebration of Luira Phanit, used to last for 12 days in the olden days, calling it a reminder of the rich cultural past.
It is essential for the present generation to hold onto these traditions and pass them down to future generations, as they hold the key to preserving our identity and heritage, he added.
Ukhrul DC Kangoo Zuringla, attended the event as guest of hon our while special guests included SP Ningshem Vashum, DLOs, and representatives from the Hunphun Executive Council.
The cultural session of the day featured traditional songs, such as Laa Khangnui (virgin dance), musical performances, indigenous games competition, and wrestling.
The five-day festival is being organised by Hunphun Katamnao Long (HKL) under the aegis of Hunphun Hanga Wungnao (village authority) .
