Ukhrul, January 14 2024:
Expressing concern over the declining cultural values and practices among the present-day youth, BJP Manipur Pradesh spokesperson MK Preshow Shimray has called upon the younger generation of the Raphei region in Ukhrul district to learn the age-old custom and traditions and preserve them for the future generations.
"The root of our identity lies in our culture and tradition.
We are a traditional society, and our youth need to acquire our ancestors' customs so as to help preserve and transmit these values to future generations," Shimray stated while speaking as chief guest at the cultural day of the ongoing 75th Platinum Jubilee and 57th general conference, sports, cultural and literary meet of the Raphei Katamnao Long (RKL) at Kuirei village, under the Chingai subdivision, on Sunday.
The former deputy speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly said that Raphei region is well-known for its rich cultural heritage.
"But it is disheartening to see the rich traditional values gradually diminishing in our society today.
Many young people are losing interest in our culture and traditions," he pointed out.
Stating that the significance of the customs is evident in the enduring folk songs (Hao Laa) and folk dances (Pheichak), he stressed on the need for the youth to acquire knowledge about the age-old customs, culture, and traditions in order to nourish and preserve the identity.
"Our rich culture is the result of these age-old practices that have been passed down by our ancestors.
We must acknowledge the blessings bestowed upon us by God through our forefathers," he said, adding that they have laid a strong foundation for the present day generation to build upon and continue their traditions.
Shimray also advised Raphei youth to use their youthful days to contribute towards the betterment of society.
"Your youth is a precious and fleeting time, and you should make the most of it while it lasts".
He said that the state government is taking keen interest in grooming the youth not just in education, but also in sports, arts, and culture.
"For this, the state government has instituted Sports University as well as Arts and Culture University in our state," he informed.
MSPDCL Ukhrul DGM Akui L Shimray and PHED Ukhrul EE Themreishang Marei also attended the event as guests of honour.
Akui expressed that the long-standing culture and tradition of the Tangkhul people have served as their history, despite the lack of written records.
He commended RKL's continuous efforts in preserving and promoting these customs.
Marei, on the other hand, extended his best wishes for a successful celebration of RKL.
Meanwhile, a cultural display competition showcasing folk songs and dances was held on the same day.
The event saw the participation of 33 out of 45 villages under Raphei region.
The troupe from Chingjaroing Ngachaphung won the first position, with Chingjaroing CV and Longpi Khullen troupes coming in second and third respectively.
