Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) and Salai Nupi Lamjing Lup (SANULAL) have condemned the demand of Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) for termination of Teresa Ningthoujam from her PhD programme at Mizoram University on charge of her involvement in collection of funds for procurement of ammunition purportedly intended for harming Kuki people in Manipur.
In a release, MUSU drew the attention of all stakeholders especially those who are in academic pursuits including Mizo Zirlai Pawl and Mizoram University authority to refrain from such irrational acts of targeting academic institutions.
Such an act is intolerable as places like academic institutions should not be touched, MUSU maintained.
If the Mizoram University authority happens to terminate the PhD programme of Teresa Ningthoujam under the pressure of MZP, then MUSU should not be held accountable for the consequences which could possibly be far more severe than expected, it cautioned.
The release pointed out that there are numerous reports and evidences of students enrolled under different programmes in Manipur University belonging to Kuki community involved directly in instances ranging from spreading false rumours of Meetei people raping Kuki women inside the University campus, indulging in gunfights, possessing sophisticated weapons, and collecting funds from the students of the university to assist in the, armed militancy to publishing writings based On false propaganda and history.
Despite these facts, MUSU has not processed any harsh steps that could affect the academic and personal career of those individuals who are worth more than plundering their careers days back.
The calm and composure which MUSU has been maintaining till date is to uphold the values of peace, respect for human life and academic excellence that Manipur University stands for, the release maintained.
Meanwhile, SANULAL denounced that the demand of MZP for termination of Teresa Ningthoujam from her PhD programme at Mizoram University as communal and urged authorities concerned not to hinder the student in her academic career.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, SANULAL general secretary AK Shanti termed as uncivilised and communal Mizo Zirlai Pawl asking the Mizoram University registrar to initiate action against Teresa on the false charge of donating to Arambai Tenggol.
The future of Teresa would be unpredictable if Mizoram University terminates her from her PhD programme, AK Shanti observed while urging the chief minister to look into the matter and ensure personal and academic security of Teresa.
AK Shanti also demanded change of her PhD programme to Manipur University, if her registration gets terminated.
Moreover, she is unlikely to be safe in Mizoram University even if she is not terminated.
As such, the government should do the needful to ensure continuation of Teresa's PhD programme through online, suggested the Lup general secretary.
