Campaign on road safety underway

Imphal, January 30 2024:
A fortnight long mobile road safety awareness campaign organised jointly by Department of Transport and Institute of Driver Training & Research Centre (IDTRC) under the theme 'Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha' as part of the National Road Safety Month, 2024, commenced from Tuesday.
Transport minister Khashim Vashum, secretary Michael Achom and deputy director Dr David Elangbam attended the launch function of the campaign held at the Manipur State Transport campus, Moirangkhom.
Awareness sessions, quiz and interactions with students by visiting different schools and colleges will be part of the campaign.
Speaking on the occasion, minister Khashim emphasised on the crucial role of media in making the public aware about road rules and safety measures.
Noting that with increase in the number of vehicles, incidents of road mishaps are also on the rise, he called upon the people to follow traffic rules, be cautious and maintain their vehicles routinely in order to reduce road accidents.
The minister also urged parents to refrain from allowing their underage children operate vehicles and advised department officials to check all criteria while issuing driving license and be sincere in the process.
Transport department is respected by people in other states but in Manipur, it is unable to carry out its duties effectively due to shortage of manpower, the Said while stressing the need for looking into the issue of traffic police doubling up as the department's personnel.
