Imphal, December 12 2014 :
Marking the 75th anniversary of Nupi Lan (Women's war) on Friday, Manipur BJP chief Th Chaoba Singh asked the state and Central Governments whether they are letting anti-AFSPA campaigner Irom Sharmila die herself.
Chaoba also said invoking Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, (AFSPA) is impossible if the disturbed area status is scrapped from Manipur.
He recounted that AFSPA was removed from the seven assembly segments of Imphal after seven MLAs agitated demanding repeal of the Act.
He said the previous Congress Government at the Centre repudiated the demand for revocation of the controversial Act and now the ruling BJP-led NDA Government has affirmed not to remove the Act.
Chaoba further said the JD-U has also demanded the Manipur Government to revoke the disturbed area status from the state, but the Government has snubbed the demand.
Asking both the Manipur and Central Government if they are letting Irom Sharmila who has been on fast for 14 years demanding repeal of AFSPA die herself, the state BJP chief said that a potential third Nupi Lan has daunted the two Governments over the AFSPA issue.
The Nupi Lan Day was observed at the BJP Manipur Pradesh office organised by Mahila Morcha, BJP Manipur.
Meanwhile, Manipur People's Party (MPP) also marked the Nupi Lan anniversary at the party office.
MPP president N Slovakian, vice-presidents O Jugindro, N Ajit and M Amutombi, and advisor Dr L Chandramani shared the dais on the occasion.
The MPP leaders paid floral tribute to the brave women who fought in the historic Nupi Lan.
