The last rites of noted academician, historian and defender of rights of suppressed peoples, Prof N Sanajaoba, who passed away at a local hospital here yesterday, were held at his residence at Khurai Lairikyengbam Leikai, Imphal East district with religious prayers of various communities and faiths today.
Religious prayers of Meetei indigenous faith, Islam, Christian and Hinduism were held in a serene atmoshpere.
A large number of people of different walks of life gathered from morning at the deceased professor's residence.
Among those who offered floral tributes to the mortal remains of the professor were members of Manipur Human Rights Commission, Ng Nongyai, RK Rajendra, Father of Social Workers Th Iboyaima, a number of scholars and academicians, leaders and members of civil society organisations and local residents.
After the religious prayers and offering of floral tributes, the body of Prof N Sanajaoba was taken to the local cremation ground accompanied by traditional musicians and modern band, where the mortal remains were consigned to holy flames.
