Governor plans all-community meet to resolve turmoil

Imphal, July 13 2023: Governor Anusuiya Uikey visited the relief camp opened at Naorem Biraha ri College, Khundrakpam in Imphal East district on Thursday and interacted with the displaced people taking shelter there.

Amid allegations and denial of involvement of militants from across the border in the Manipur crisis, Anusuiya Uikey also revealed that the government is taking up measures to flush out militants from Myanmar to control the situation and restore peace in the state.

Responding to queries from media persons during her to visit the relief camp at Naorem Birahari College, the Governor acknowledged reports about involvement of militants from Myanmar.

Central security forces are carrying out operations to flush out these militants from across the border so that the situation could be controlled and peace restored.

Bunkers are being dismantled on daily basis, she said while assuring that the situation would be brought under control in a few days.

A Governor's secretariat release informed that a total of 296 displaced people are taking shelter in the relief camp.

The Governor heard about grievances and hardships faced by the people and assured them of extending all possible help.

She also enquired about the facilities/ amenities being provided to the people and directed the district administration to improve whatever necessary while confiding to the inmates about directing the chief secretary to provide all requirements to the relief camps.

Uikey also asked the district administration to initiate skill training for the displaced people.

Condemning all forms of violence, the Governor said that violence will bring no solution and all have to shun violence.

She said added that only a meaningful dialogue will bring an amicable solution and therefore all stakeholders will come forward for talks.

She then appealed all communities/stakeholders to come forward for talks and to co-operate the government in bringing nor malcy and peace in Manipur.

When asked about her initiatives for restoring peace, she said that an all communities meet will be held at Raj Bhavan to discuss the issue soon.

While interacting with the people, Governor assured that state government with the help of the centre is making all out efforts to bring the situation under control to ensure that all the communities including the Meiteis and Kukis live together as usual.

Governor Uikey stressed that hatred among the two communities has to be removed and both should stop violence which is the prerequisite for initiating a meaningful dialogue.

Only then peace and normalcy will be restored, she added.

Stating that more than 60,000 security personnel have been deployed in the state, the Governor said that search operations to nab miscreants are on andlarge cache of arms have been recovered.

Bunkers have also been removed in many places, she added.

On re-settlement of the displaced people, the Governor said that as a temporary measure, pre-fabricated houses are being built at Sawombung and the displaced people will be shifted there until the situation permits them to return to their respective places.

Adequate compensation will also be given to the people for their burnt houses and properties, she added.

As part of the visit, the Governor distributed blankets to the families in the camps from her side.

She also distributed fans and rice cookers to the displaced people.

Secretary to Governor Bobby Waikhom accompanied the Governor during the visit which also had the presence of Khundrakpam MLA 1h Lokeshwar Singh, Imphal East DC Khumanthem Diana and imphal East SP Ksh Shivakanta Singh among others.
