Gaikhangam stresses on stress management

Imphal, October 06 2012: A two-day long 38th Annual Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society-Eastern Zonal Branch (CEZIPS 2012) under the theme "Consultation Liaison Psychiatry: Need of the Hour" has begun at the Jubilee Hall of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Saturday.

Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam,Dr PK Singh, President, Indian Psychiatric Society-Eastern Zonal Branch (IPS-EZB), Prof S Sekhajit, Director, RIMS and Prof Roy Abraham Kallivayalli, President, Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) attended the inaugural function of the conference as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

Delivering his speech at the opening of the conference, Gaikhangam said these days everyone is very tense, worried about their business, competitiveness, uncertainty in their day today life, future of self and their children which lead to the increasing stress related disorders.He said High Blood Pressure, heart attack, diabetes, asthma and ulcer are now so common, expressing hope for more inputs on stress management.

Many youths are indulging in drugs and alcohol, and many metropolitan cities and the Northeastern states are badly affected by heroin, spasmo proxivon tablets, other intoxicating drugs and alcohol, the home minister remarked, saying such substances spoil their health, academic careers and future.

The facilities of modern psychiatry and mental health facilities must be available to all the nook and corner of the country and more awareness programme should be organized especially in the remote, rural and hill areas where most of the people are very ignorant about such problems, Gaikhangam said.

He further underscored the importance of qualified psychiatrists in the region while admitting the fact that Northeast still lacks qualified psychiatrists and hence it needs more facilities of training.

"It is right time we should realise that anyone irrespective of age, sex, religion, caste, educational background may suffer from mental illness.

A healthy lifestyle avoiding drugs and alcohol, involve in social activities, relaxation after a day's hard work and believe in honesty will boost to our mental health.

If we suspect any metal illness we must not hesitate to visit a psychiatrist," Gaikhangam recommended.

Home Minister Gaikham, Prof S Sekhajit, Director, RIMS, Prof Roy Abraham Kallivayalli, President, Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) and Dr PK Singh, President, IPS-EZB attended the inaugural function of the conference as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

RIMS director Prof S Sekhajit while speaking on the occasion informed that the conference is being held here in Imphal for the second time and said the state as well as the PG students of RIMS will profit from it.

He laid emphasis on imparting basic knowledge to PG students on how to give counselling while dealing with psychiatric patients noting that psychiatry related patients are on the rise.

At the function, a souvenir pertaining to the conference was also released by Home Minister Gaikhangam, in addition four doctors were honoured with different awards.

Dr S Haque Nizamei was conferred with LP Verma Oration Award 2012, Dr Venkatesh GM was honoured with the Bombay Psychiatric Silver Jubilee Year Award 2011, Dr Sauvik Chakraborty was given the Leelavati Bholanath Award 2011 and Dr SK Tikka was awarded the Sidartha Memorial Award 2011. The awards respectively carried a cash of Rs 5000/- and Rs 2000/- each along with mementoes and certificates.

Later at the function, Dr PK Singh, the outgoing president of IPS-EZB handed over the presidential medal to the newly elected president of the society Dr SK Deuri.

The inaugural function was also attended by Dr N Heramani, organising chairman, CEZIPS 2012, Dr RK Lenin, organizing secretary, CEZIPS 2012, Dr Sanjiba Dutta, secretary IPS-EZB, Dr Arim Kumar Mallick, also secretary of IPS-EZB and Dr Sk Deuri.
