Imphal, December 03 2023:
In a renewed effort towards ecological restoration and cultural preservation, the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has recommenced the removal of phumdis and cleaning activities at Thanga Chinglak stream, also known as Thamakhong Maril (Thamakhong steam) .
This initiative, undertaken after a hiatus of more than 6 years, is a collaborative endeavour involving local fishermen and members of the local youth club.
Thanga Chinglak/Thamakhong Maril, a vital channel for Loktak Lake connecting the main water body and Longum Pat (also known as Manung Pat), plays a pivotal role in both ecological and socio-economic-cultural aspects.
However the entire area of Longumpat is currently in a critical condition due to various factors.

According to Meitei mythology and folklore, this channel holds sacred significance as the legendary fishing spot ('El Chingba') where Moirang Thoibi, a revered figure, used to fish.
The resumption of phumdi removal and stream cleaning is expected to deliver multifaceted benefits.
Firstly, it contributes to the preservation of Loktak Lake's delicate ecosystem and natural hydrological regime, ensuring a sustainable environment for aquatic life, including the fish population.
Secondly, it aligns with the cultural heritage of the region, rekindling the connection between the community and the mythological significance of the channel.
The collaborative effort with local fishermen underscores a community-driven approach to environmental conservation, actively involving those dependent on the lake for their livelihoods.
The initiative aims to strike a balance between ecological preservation and the needs of the local population.
Phumdi removal brings forth primary advantages such as facilitating smoother navigation for fishing boats, boosting the local fishing industry, and enhancing accessibility for villagers relying on the channel for transportation and daily activities.
The resumption of the project after a six-year gap emphasizes a commitment to addressing environmental concerns and preserving cultural heritage.
As the removal progresses, it is expected to make significant contributions to the sustainable management of Loktak Lake, ensuring a harmonious coexistence of ecological preservation and cultural reverence.
LDA Chairman M Asnikumar Singh said, "The removal of phumdi and cleaning of Thamakhong Maril is a crucial step in the conservation and sustainable management of our beloved Loktak Lake.
Despite limited resources, the active participation of the local population signifies a collective effort towards our conservation mission.
LDA remains dedicated to completely rejuvenating Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands, considering their ecological, socio-economic, and cultural significance.
The role of the local population is critical, and I appeal for public cooperation" .
"LDA is consulting with renowned experts from IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur, WISA (Wetland International South Asia), and many others for a long-term and holistic approach to completely rejuvenating Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands", Asnikumar added.
