JFD awaits Govt's response

Imphal, August 12 2026: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) is eagerly awaiting the State Government's decision and response to the people's clamour for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of conducting any census exercise in the State.

Pressing the State Government for a response to the growing public demand, the JFD has been staging a sit-in-protest at Wangkhei Angom Leikai United Youth Club complex.

Speaking to media persons there this evening, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that they have repeatedly asked in unequivocal terms to either defer or abort the census operations in Manipur until the NRC is updated.

"Eagerly awaiting the Government's response, we have been protesting here for the last three days", he said.

The JFD Students' Wing today foiled a training programme of census enumerators and supervisors at S Kula Women's College, Nambol.

It was rather unfortunate that the Bishnupur District Police chased the student protesters like enemies, Jeetendra said.

He said that 10 protesters were detained but they were later released.

The JFD convenor asked the State police to acknowledge that the current movement is driven by a deep concern for the future of Manipur, and respect the protesters.

The protest by the Students' Wing is just the beginning.

The JFD is waiting for the State Government's response, Jeetendra said.

If the census operations go ahead without first updating the NRC, the future of all indigenous people will be in great peril, he said.

The JFD convenor appealed to all Government employees to take due note of this fact and stay away from training programmes and all activities related to the scheduled census operations.

He further appealed to all sections of people to hold torches and shout the "No NRC, No Census" slogan from 7 pm to 8 pm tomorrow (August 13) .
