Tokpa Naga village attacked, Church, houses burnt

Imphal, August 12 2026: Tokpa Naga village, located near Tumnoupokpi Thangal village in Kangpokpi district, was attacked by suspected Kuki militants last night at around 9.30, said sources.

The attack came two days after Kailenjang village was attacked on August 10 .

While heavy gunfire was reported, the attack today at Tokpa Naga village left at least nine houses burnt, and several other structures and a Church extensively damaged by fire.

During the attack, the suspected Kuki militants physically assaulted and confiscated mobile phones of four civilians, said the sources.

Purported visuals of the aftermath of the attack show several structures engulfed in flames and thick smoke rising.

Nearby Thangal and Naga villagers rushed to the villages and helped save at least two houses which were on fire, preventing further spread.

Families whose houses have been burnt and damaged have been displaced and are seeking shelter at safer locations, said sources.

Nine village authorities including the Tokpa Naga have meanwhile strongly condemned the armed attack and arson.

In a separate statement, the Tokpa Naga Village Authority said the group of armed men which carried out the attack came in full combat fatigue.

The group carrying sophisticated automatic assault rifles opened fire indiscriminately and set ablaze residential houses, one Church, and other properties, causing extensive damage and displacing affected families, said the village authority (VA) .

Despite timely emergency requests and appeals, CRPF personnel and Kangpokpi police personnel stationed at close proximity in Kalapahar High School did not respond immediately, alleged the VA .

The Government and its relevant agencies must register an FIR and immediately launch an investigation into the incident.

The suspected Kuki militants involved in the attack must be arrested and strict legal actions must be taken against them, said the VA .

It also urged the Government to deploy adequate security forces in the area to ensure safety and security of the villagers and prevent further attacks.

The village and the affected villagers must be provided immediate relief and compensated for the damaged houses, Church and properties, it added.

The Tokpa Naga Village remains committed to preserving peace, communal harmony, and the rule of law.

The State Government, district administration, and security agencies must ensure prompt justice, accountability, and protection of innocent civilians without discrimination, it added.

Many other Naga bodies including the Liangmai Naga Council too have condemned the attack and demanded immediate investigation to arrest the militants involved.

Our Correspondent, meanwhile, reports that a brief confrontation broke out between security forces and Kuki-Zo women at Kangpokpi today.

Claiming there was a swift response from the security forces in the attack at Tokpa Naga village, the Kuki-Zo women accused the same security forces of not responding to the Kailenjang attack with the same energy and urgency.

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) also criticised the "swift but partisan" response of the security forces, reports our Correspondent.
