UGCM places grievances to CM

A 14 members team of United Gorkha
Committee Manipur (UGCM) accompanied by Sekmai MLA, Kh
Devendro Singh met Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh at his of-
ficial residence at Babupara on Sunday at around 5:30 pm.
The team
submitted a 12 page memorandum to the CM at the meeting citing
the issues and grievances of the Gorkha community in the State.
Shiva Kumar Basnet, Secretary UGCM, who is also the
Pradhan of Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat said, the team, after
a long discussion with the Chief Minister, submitted a memo-
randum highlighting the 200 years history of Gorkha
settlement in Manipur.
The memorandum also urged the Chief
Minister to recognise the Gorkhas as natives of the State while
drafting and finalizing a new Bill for the Protection of Manipur
People so as to protect and safeguard the constitutional rights
and privileges of the Gorkha community
The Chief Minister also gave a positive assurance to the
committee for the erection of a statue of Gorkha martyr
Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri, he said.
On the unavailability of Gorkha village authority in hills
areas, the Chief Minister assured to make suitable arrange-
ments for establishment of village administration of the
Gorkhas in the hill areas, Basnet added.
United Gorkha Committee Manipur was formed as an apex
body of the Gorkhalis in the State last month by various
Gorkha civil bodies.
Sources said that the UGCM will rep-
resent the Gorkha community of Manipur and share their
views and opinion with the drafting committee on ILPS new
Bills and also on other issue related to the State.
