16th National Fish Farmers' Day

College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Central Agriculture University (Imphal) celebrated the 16th National Fish Farmers' Day yesterday at the college auditorium.
According to a statement, the programme was inaugurated by Padma Bhushan Prof RB Singh, Chancellor of Central Agricultural University (Imphal) as the chief guest of the programme.
The programme was also attended by Prof M Premjit Singh, Vice Chancellor of the university.
Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey, Dean, College of Fisheries delivered the welcome address and expressed sincere appreciation for the enthusiasm and commitment of the dignitaries and fish farmers to participate in the programme.
Rameshwar Das, IFS, Secretary (Fisheries), Govt of Tripura and Dr ML Bhowmik, former Dean, College of Fisheries were present as the guests of honour.
Other renowned dignitaries from different parts of the country were also present on the occasion.
Progressive Fish farmers from different States of NE participated in the programme.
Different farm related publications and fish farming calendars were released on the day by the dignitaries.
Exhibition stalls were also set up in the college to showcase different achievements and activities undertaken by the college in the field of education, research and extension.
Different farm publications, fish products, fish feeds, etc were also exhibited in the stall.
Prof RB Singh highlighted the importance of blue revolution in the country.
He expressed his admiration of the contribution made by Dr Hiralal Chaudhury and Dr KH Alikunhi who invented induced breeding technology on this day in 1957 .
Five fish farmers were presented the "Best Fish Farmer" of their respective States by the College of Fisheries, Lembucherra.
The farmers were awarded based on their enormous and outstanding contribution in fisheries and based on the nominations sent by the Department of Fisheries from their respective states.
The awardees are Likha Kamin of Yachull village (Arunachal Pradesh), Naorem Lashmon Singh of Kodompokpi (Manipur), Samdup Bhutia of Upper Sribadam (Sikkim), Babul Dey of Kumarghat (Tripura) and Haradhan Mahanta of West Garo Hills (Meghalaya).
From the adopted village of Bagbari (West Tripura), under the Village Adoption Programme of College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, "Best Fish Farmer", "Best Cast net Trainee" and "Best Drag Net Trainee" awards were given to Sujit Nama, Khumtia Debbarma and Champa Sarkar respectively.
The inaugural session of the programme was followed by a technical session wherein experts from different departments were invited as resource persons in the farmers-scientist-students interaction session.
Different farm related problems and constraints were discussed; experiences and outstanding innovations of the farmers were also shared thereby creating a better opportunity for the entire fish farmers to expand and improve their fish farming approaches.
