Purul Union imposes prohibitions to protect forests and wildlife

The Purul (Hiimai) Union has resolved to protect and preserve the forests and its wildlife during a general body meeting attended by all Purul villages on September 18 at Rasha Hall, Purul village.
In connection with forest conservation and wildlife protection, the meeting has placed restrictions on starting of forest fires/wild fires, in and around the village and forests.
Further, the meeting also prohibited killing of wildlife by use of guns, air guns, catapult, traditional animal traps, fishing with electrical mechanisms etc.
The meeting also resolved to impose fines on people who violate the prohibitions.
Addressing the media, M Heni, president, Purul Union sought the support and cooperation of all concerned in the decisions taken by the villagers.
He stated that the Purul village inhabited by the Poumai Naga tribe, situated in Senapati district with a population of 7000 residents, have agreed upon the adopted resolutions formulated by the general body meeting for forest conservation and wild life protection as per the Manipur Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 .
He further informed that a fine of Rs 60,000 will be imposed on any individual found setting/starting fires in the forest.
Additionally, persons found indulging in hunting of wild animals or birds in any form will incur a fine of Rs.20,000 .
Hunting tools or weapons such as firearms, air guns, trap tools, catapult, gums will be seized and confiscated, he added.
Use of batteries, dynamite, chemical, natural herbs or explosive for fishing is also strictly prohibited, where offenders or violators will be imposed a penalty of Rs 20,000 .
Any outsider or non-resident of Purul village caught hunting, killing wildlife within the jurisdiction of Purul will be slapped with a fine of Rs 20,000 and their tools or weapons will be confiscated, he informed.
The meeting also mentioned that informers or reporters of such violations will be handsomely rewarded with half of the sum collected from the offender's, while adding that the identity of the informants will remain confidential.
