Moreh meet reaffirms protection of border

Imphal, August 17 2013 : Members of different social organizations and community leaders under the aegis of Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing held a meeting to discuss the controversial issue of Indo-Myanmar border fencing at the Hall of Trade Centre, Moreh today.

It may be noted that the Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing was formed after various social organizations led by Information Centre for Hill Areas, Manipur (ICHAM) conducted a spot inspection of the villages affected by the Indo-Myanmar border fencing.

The Committee had earlier resolved to protect the border villages and safeguard the State's territorial integrity.

The meeting was attended by Convenor of Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing Brozendra Ningomba, President of ICHAM N Rajendro (Boy), President of Kuki Students' Organization (KSO), Moreh Block H Thongkhongam Mate, Co-Convenor of Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing Letngam Lupho, General Secretary of Tamil Sangam, Moreh KBS Maniam, Advisor of Tamil Sangam M Thellakhan, M Moses of Goodwill Team, Pallel Area, Vice-President of RPDF Z Woontomla Maku Maring, village chiefs and other community leaders.

As per the report of the Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing, 2805 houses in 28 villages with a total population of 12788 in Ukhrul district, and 2969 houses in 14 villages with a population of 17612 in Chandel district would be affected by the border fencing.

The meeting further reaffirmed the earlier resolutions that the border fencing must be stopped unless the international boundaries are amicably settled and members of the committee must be included in the border survey.

The meeting also demanded the Government not to handover Choro Khunou of Ukhrul to Myanmar.

President of ICHAM N Rajendra said that ICHAM has been highlighting the issues of the State to the public after conducting thorough inspection.

The border fencing is a sensitive issue which must be settled at the earliest.

However, the Indian Government has remained indifferent to such issues of the State.

He welcomed the State Cabinet's decision to set up a high level committee to monitor the border fencing, and appealed to all people to join hands in protecting the border villages of the State.

Convenor Brozendra Ningomba refuted the statement of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi on border fencing saying that several kilometres of land in the State has been affected by the ongoing border fencing.

The controversy emerged after the officials of AR and BRO submitted a wrong report to the Ministry of Home Affairs, he noted.

He further said that the Congress MLAs should better conduct a spot inspection and place a detailed report to the Chief Minister instead of the table survey works.
