Prof Dr G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, Manipur, paricipated in a National consultation on AI Readiness for Healthcare, Education & Research, organised by National Medical Forum under the mission of National Medical AI Mission (NMAIM) on August 16 at Eros Hotel, Nehru Place, New Delhi.
He attended the event as an expert panelist, said a press note issued by the media cell of RIMS .
The National consultation brought together leading medical educators, healthcare professionals, researchers and policymakers to deliberate upon the responsible, ethical and effective integration of AI into healthcare, medical education and research.
During the programme, Dr Sunil Kumar shared his insights on AI readiness in medical education and the need for structured training of teachers and medical educators.
He emphasised that faculty development and AI literacy are essential for preparing teachers to effectively utilise emerging technologies in teaching, clinical learning and research.
Highlighting the potential of AI in overcoming limitations in clinical exposure, he stated that AI can provide students with access to rare and complex clinical cases and learning materials that may not be readily available in every medical institution.
He underscored the potential of premier institutions such as AIIMS and other leading medical institutions to develop and share AI-enabled repositories of authentic and rare clinical cases, thereby enriching the learning experience of medical students across the country.
He further emphasised that AIIMS, the National Medical Commission (NMC) and other premier medical institutions should take the lead in developing a robust, ethical and standardised AI-enabled medical education ecosystem.
Such initiatives, he noted, can significantly bridge gaps in clinical exposure, strengthen competency-based medical education and enhance the preparedness of future healthcare professionals.
He described the responsible adoption of AI as a boon to the medical community, with the potential to complement clinical expertise, expand educational opportunities and contribute to better healthcare delivery, while maintaining appropriate ethical, academic and professional standards.
