Imphal, August 17 2023:
World Meetei Council (WMC) has expressed its anguish over the disinformation campaign carried out against WMC by some people who allegedly claim to represent an organisation called IMO (International Meetei Organisation) .
In a release, WMC stated that the campaign has cast a shadow on the learned advocates who are fighting their best to get justice in the Supreme Court of India.
The council informed that the said organisation had issued a statement in social media platforms telling the people not to contribute to the fund which is required for legal fees.
"They had tried to discredit our Advocates in the Supreme Court viz Ahanthem Henry, Ahongsangbam David and Ahanthem Rohen.
They said the services of the three Advocates are not necessary etc because they are not effective.
But the fact of the matter is, it is by their spirited and dedicated service that we are in a better position in our legal fight.
We know the Manipur Government has also been trying its level best to get justice to all the victims of this violence without any prejudice", it claimed.
The Council alleged that unfortunately the said organisation represented by Adv Ngangom Junior Luwang had deliberately tried to discredit both WMC and the team of lawyers in the Supreme Court.
"This is an act of cowardice and we condemned it.
We all know that what is required in such an hour of crisis is unity", it added.
WMC also highlighted that to bring an amicable solution to the campaign, the Council had contacted Adv Luwang for his clarification.
"However, he did not cooperate with us citing legal technicality, saying he cannot disclose his clients etc.", claimed WMC while appealing to the people to ignore such stupidity and idiocy if they come across such campaigns.
"Finally, we would like to state that our team of lawyers in the Supreme Court and also Sr Adv Sapam Biswajit are our heroes, without their services we could be in a difficult position.
Everything they do in respect of our case in the Supreme Court is pro bono, i.e.free of cost.
In fact, they are doing it on their own initiative for our community", it added.
"Last but not the least the Sr Supreme Court Adv Jayadev Gupta whose service we hired has to be paid.
And till today we had paid Sr Adv Jayadev Gupta Rs 7 lakh, who had appeared 8 times, which is just a token fee because Senior Supreme Court lawyers charge in lakhs per appearance", concluded WMC.
