Housewife alleges rape by father in-law

Imphal, October 02 2012: Accusing the father in-law of repeatedly outraging her modesty at a North AOC hotel, a young housewife has demanded the most stringent punitive action against the father in-law as well as her husband, who has reportedly gone hiding following the incident, failing which she would commit suicide.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, Chingangbam Ningol Thokchom Ongbi Sarita (20) claimed that her husband Thokchom Ghanashyam (19) s/o Th Ratan (40) of Charangpat Maning Leikai under Thoubal district, personally dropped her till her maternal home on September 12 in connection with the Panchayat Election, held the next day.

The day after election (Sept 14) Ratan came to pick her up and both left for Charangpat in Ratan's car.

However, instead of heading towards Charangpat, Ratan took her to Hotel Apsara, North AOC where the crime was committed with the father in-law whipping out a gun and threatening to shoot her if she resisted.

Inspite of strong resistance, Ratan overpowered Sarita and raped her a number of times following which she lost consciousness.

The victim also informed that on their way back to Charangpat, Ratan stopped the car at Thoubal Bazar and asked her to go alone from there and gave her Rs 200 as autorickshaw fare.

However, Sarita returned to her maternal home and narrated her ordeal to her mother.

As the incident was conveyed to the police by her relatives, Ratan was apprehended from near the North AOC hotel on the same evening by a team of Imphal East district police, Sarita informed while contending that during her nearly four months marriage to Ghanashyam her in-laws asked her to remain indoors besides constant verbal abuses and reprimands at the slightest mistake.

The father in-law even insisted that Sarita do not resist his future amorous intention for she would suffer even more social stigma while his punishment will last a few days in jail.

Fearing more atrocities if she ventures back to her husband's place, Sarita returned to her maternal home as she was determined to ensure that the culprit gets benefiting punishment.

On her demand for similar punishment against Ghanashyam, Sarita stated that her husband remaining silent on the matter amounts to supporting the rapist father and thus deserved to be punished.

Reiterating her demand for exemplary punishment against the father in-law and the husband, Sarita said as her modesty has been outraged and sees no positives in her future life she has already decided to sacrifice her life so that womenfolk are saved from devilish individuals such as Thokchom Ratan.

The father in-law was reportedly arrested when he returned to the North AOC hotel to fabricate the name enlisted in the hotel's register.
