National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur has won a research grant of Rs 20 lakh from the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) to lead a study on the impact of Swachh Bharat Mission on plastic waste management in five North Eastern States of India.
After a rigorous assessment by experts in two stages and interacting with the shortlisted candidates, ICSSR selected the proposal of NIT Manipur from amongst 3801 project proposals received from across the country, said a press release issued by ICSSR.
The project is being led by Dr Adani Azhoni, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, NIT Manipur.
The project will evaluate the effectiveness of the Swachh Bharat Mission for plastic waste management in five North Eastern States in collaboration with NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Nagaland, Mizoram University and Dibrugarh University.
It will investigate various dimensions of waste management, including waste segregation, collection, and disposal systems and how the Government scheme has impacted far-flung regions such as North East India.
Besides evaluating the awareness generated among the population regarding plastic waste and the promotion of alternative practices such as recycling and reducing plastic consumption, it also will explore the effectiveness of educational and awareness programs, community participation, and stakeholder engagement in fostering behavioral change and sustainable waste management practices.
In this regard, Dr Azhoni informed that aspects related to education and training in plastic waste management, provision of incentives and regulations to enforce penalties and fines to defaulters will be investigated to provide insights to public policy making.
