Imphal, September 26 2024:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has claimed that the objective of the programme which is planned to take place at City Convention Centre on September 28 under the theme "Meetei Kanbada Eikhoi Apunbagee Thoudam" is to subdue the Council.
In a statement signed by its different units viz Assam, Delhi, Nagaland, Tripura, Myanmar and Manipur, the WMC appealed to all concerned to not hold the programme.
As per the WMC, Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam has been invited to attend the programme as chief guest.
The Council also said that they have nothing to do with the proposed programme scheduled on September 28 .
Meanwhile, the Council said that the State Government assisting the Centre which allegedly wants to break the State apart instead of working to take Manipur which has a history spanning over three thousand years to greater heights is unfortunate.
WMC was founded on October 1, 2018, it said adding that the Council, led by its chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam, has been sticking to its resolution taken during a meeting at Guwahati in 2021 to demand granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) tag to Meeteis before the proposed delimitation in 2026 .
The Council also claimed that they were prevented from holding a press meet at Manipur Press Club by Chief Minister N Biren Singh by sending police.
The fate of Meeteis will be uncertain if the ethnic group is not enlisted in the ST list of the Constitution before the proposed delimitation,
it added.
Claiming that the Biren led Government has been colluding with some former members of WMC who were either expelled or left the Council on medical ground or to contest MP election to subdue the ST movement, the WMC alleged that the proposed programme which is organised in the name of WMC on September 28 is to break the Council apart.
The Council appealed to all concerned to cancel the proposed programme.
