Imphal, October 16:
Setting October 17 as the deadline for releasing 11 students who have been arrested and lodged in the jail in connection with the ongoing agitation demanding restoration of normal classes in the wake of the terminating the services of 466 part time lecturers in various Government colleges, Imphal College Students' Union has warned of taking recourse to more intense form agitations from the following day if the Government fails to release all the arrested students unconditionally.
In a statement, debate and extension secretary of the student union Ph Pakpi further announced the resolution of the student body to stay away from participating in the Inter Collage Youth Festival being organised by Manipur University from October 19 if the arrested students were not released without any condition.
While expressing hope that MUSU president would also understand and extend his co-operation in this regard, Pakpi also called upon other college students to follow suit.
Meanwhile, All India Students' Federation (AISF), Manipur State Council has urged the Govt to bring about an amicable solution to end the cease work strike of the part time lecturers working in various Government colleges so that the students are not deprived of their education.
In a secretary of the student body Kh Inaobi Meetei decried the indifferent attitude of the Government toward resolving the issue of part timers which has started having its impact on the academic atmosphere.
This only shows that the Government does not care about the plights of the students not to mention about its concern for the development of the educational system in Manipur, the AISF statement charged.
The student body also categorically stated that the Govt of Manipur should be solely held responsible for the loss to be suffered by the students due to deprivation of their rights to education and any untoward incident that might occur during the course of the ongoing agitation.
