Many condole Junior Research fellow's demise

Imphal, April 06 2013 : Condoling the sudden demise of N Sa-tyabhama Devi, a Junior Re- search Fellow of DBT Project Pathology, Dept of Pathology, RIMS, the Staff, Principal Investigators and CO-PIs of different DBT Projects of Re-gional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal de-manded fitting punishment of the culprit involved in the brutal killing of Satyabhama.

A condolence meeting was convened today at the Seminar Hall of Pathology Dept, RIMS wherein members pre-sent observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul, informed a statement issued by Dr DC Sharma, PI DBT Project Pathology, RIMS.

Meanwhile, a condolence meeting was held today at RIMS Administrative block on the demise of Satyabhama Ningombam, whose body was found yesterday.

The speakers including Prof S Sekharjit, the Director, strongly condemned the inhumane and dastardly crime in unequivocal language.

They underlined the imperative need to ensure that there is no more such crime in RIMS and society as well.

The death of the scientist who had contributed her mites to the project is bound to cause a temporary setback.

A condolence message was also sent to the bereaved family with the hope that there will be mental strength for them to bear with this irreparable loss, said a RIMS' statement.

Sit-in-protest and road bandh

The employees who had assembled there stood in two minutes' silence for the departed soul.

A dedicated police team is investigating into the murder of of Satyabhama, stated Deputy Chief Minister Gai-khangam who is also in charge of Home Department.

Talking to TSE today, Gaikhangam claimed that all those involved in the murder would be apprehended and exemplary action initiated against them.

The Home Minister also condemned the murder in the strongest term saying that it was beyond human nature.

The Non-Teaching Employees Welfare Association, RIMS, also held a condolence meeting on the death of Sa-tyabhama Ningombam.

The meeting also strongly condemned the horrific crime against her.

Students of Manipur University today staged a sit-in protest at MU Bus Stand (Coffee Corner) against the brutal killing of Satyabhama of Kakwa Selungba Leikai.

Organised by the Joint Students of MU, the protestors demanded the Government to immediately book the culprit(s) involved in the murder.

Further, demanding protection of students especially women, the MU students also pledged support to any action decided by the concerned JAC towards delivery of justice in the matter.

The students also urged all concerned to prevent the recurrence of such ghastly crimes against women.

At the same time, registering vehement condemnation on the brutal killing of Ningombam Satyabhama, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Manipur State president L Ibomcha demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators and fitting punishment against them.

Ibomcha also shared the grief of the bereaved family.

A statement issued by the NCP today demanded that the Govt should fittingly compensate the family of the deceased while also urging the Govt to review the law and order situation.

The Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress also strongly condemned the killing of Satyabhama while also sharing grief of the deceased family.

The MPTC, in a statement, demanded the resignation of the Government for its failure to safeguard the lives and properties of innocent public specially the weaker sections and women.

Joining the chorus of condemnation, Manipur State Commission for Women conveyed that it would initiate relevant course of actions in connection with the crime.

Demonstrations and sit-in-protests were also staged at different parts of the State against the brutal murder of Satyabhama today.

Large number of people took part in the sit-in-protest staged by the Joint Action Committee constituted against the murder at Kakwa Bazar.

Later, shouting different slogans, the protesters marched from Kakwa Bazar towards Chinga.

However, police blocked the rallyists at Chingamakong.

Urging the protestors to calm down, police assured them that the culprits would be awarded befitting punishment.

The rallyists then demonstrated at Chingamakhong by sitting in the middle of the road.

They shouted slogans like 'Punish the culprits', 'Abolish Ibobi Government', 'Government is blind' etc.

Later, a charter of demands, which was passed in a public meeting held yesterday at the community hall of Kakwa Laishram Selungba Leikai, was submitted in the form of a memorandum to the State Government.

The demands included life imprisonment/capital punishment to the perpetrators, immediate arrest of the culprits, banishment of the main accused from the respective locality.

The memorandum also warned that the State Government should be held responsible for any unwanted activity which may occur during the course of agitation to be taken up with different civil society organisations if the demands are not fulfilled within five days.

The memorandum also said that the body of Satyabhama would not be claimed until the demands are fulfilled.

An indefinite bandh called by the JAC against the murder also affected normal life in the capital.
