With an objective of producing more international class Taekwondo players from Manipur decks have been cleared to conduct the inaugural Governor's Taekwondo Cup Manipur 2005 at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium from March 31 till April 3.The announcement was made today at Hotel Excellency by the Manipur Taekwondo Association president Y Khemchand on the occasion of reception of State Taekwondo players who wrested the team championship title at the recently held 19th edition of NE Sports Festival.
Presenting his presidential address at the reception programme, Khemchand outlined that Manipur has a major role to play to win India a place in Taekwondo event at the 2008 Olympic and Asian games.
Also announcing hosting the 25th Junior National Taekwondo Championship in May last week at Imphal the State association president asserted that to produce competent players the Governor's Cup competition is being given top priority.
On the latter competition, he explained of sub-junior and junior competitors having to vie for top each whereas the seniors would compete in eight classes.
The Governor's Cup would serve as selection criteria for the forthcoming national junior championship with medallists at the national level competition to be selected for representing the country at the Junior World Cup, he said.
He also informed of consent to establish a North East Taekwondo regional headquarters at Imphal so as to popularise and develop the sports and that Taekwondo Federation of India is pursuing a new programme to boost the sports through selection of 20 talented players whose educational requirements would be borne by the Federation.
