Imphal, March 18:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has said today that it might be constrained to impose a general strike on the last day of the ongoing seven-day long State Assembly session if a definite decision to implement Meetei Mayek is not taken by the Government.
In a statement signed by its publicity and propaganda secretary, M Radhamani Devi, the student body said that the stand of boycotting the ongoing Assembly session by DESAM is becoming clearer to the people with each passing day as the august House has not been able to take any decision of public importance till today.
Reacting to the Chief Minister's remarks on the demand for introduction of Meetei Mayek in schools and colleges, DESAM said the Chief Minister's comparison of a script which has been in existence since ancient time to a young child shows his lack of complete knowledge on the importance of Meetei Mayek.
Such remarks only befit a person who does not understand his own identity and the importance of the script handed down by their forefathers, the statement said.
The demand for introduction of Meetei Mayek in schools and colleges only meant that the original script of the people should be popularised instead of depending on a borrowed script borrowed, DESAM elaborated.
As to the Government's assertion that the matter related to the demand for introduction of Meetei Mayek is being discussed, DESAM demanded to know how long would it takes.
The matter has been under discussion for the last 26 year and when would it be over, DESAM wondered.
Giving a veil threat to the Government of intensifying the ongoing Mayek stir, the statement said that DESAM has so far taken recourse to agitation in a democratic manner as it does not want to give trouble to the people and disturb the academic atmosphere of the students.
