Even as the agitation launched by MEELAL has gained momentum all over, the Additional District Judge, Fast Track Court has begun the civil trial, following a petition challenging the validity of the 27 letter script, which has been approved by the Government.
The case was filed by one Y Tomthin, president of the Meetei Yellou Mayek Thousil Lup, way back in 1997 before the Civil Judge, senior division in favour of the script advocated by Naoriya Phullo.
The petitioner prayed before the Court to issue an injunction against the 27 letter script contending that it cannot be implemented as it is not the original Meetei Mayek.
The State Govt and 17 others including Education Commissioner, Dr L Chandramani, who was then a member of the expert committee that okayed the 27 letter script, Sorojini Devi then Deputy Director Archives etc are amongst the defendants.
Advocate Bimolchandra, who appeared on behalf of one of the 18 defendants today cross examined Tomthin before the Court headed by M Ibohal Singh.
