Senapati protests rape of minor girl

A public rally cum sit-in-protest was held today at Senapati district headquarters demanding befitting punishment against the culprit involved in the rape and attempt to murder case of a girl near Takamai village in Senapati district.
The demonstration at Senapati Bazar was organised by the JAC against the rape and attempt to murder of Durga Devi in collaboration with the SenapatiKarong Area Women's Welfare Association, Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA), and Senapati District Women Association.
During the demonstration, the gatherings unanimously resolved to demand the arrest of the culprit involved in the crime and fitting punishment be meted out to him, to pressurise the Government to bear medical expense of Durga Devi who is undergoing treatment in Guwahati and to show regard to the rape victim irrespective of caste, creed or community.

Later, the protestors handed a memorandum to the Chief Minister of the State through the DC, Senapati.
The memorandum pointed out that the perpetrator of the crime was Ngangom Shantikumar (30) son of Ng Rajen of Sekta Mayai Leikai under Lamlai Police Station.
Ng Shantikumar is the son-in-law of Takamai village chief, Kashing.
He has been staying at Takamai with his in-laws.
Since the occurence of the incident, Shantikumar's family was said to have persuaded the 14-year old rape victim's family to settle the matter in private, which the victim's family flatly refused.
Consequently, a police case was filed in this connection.
The memo also demanded the Government to provide financial assistance to the victim and bear all the medical expenses.
Protestors have also donated money for use in Durga's medical treatment.
It has been reportedly estimated that around Rs 24,000 was contributed today as donation.
